The YPG has announced the dissolution of its autonomous administration and all its military and civilian structures. This follows an agreement with President Ahmed al-Sharaa to integrate YPG forces into the brigades of the Syrian army. We see a lot of high level analysis on these shifts, but the practical reality is that the regional power balance just moved. Transitioning from a primary US proxy to a component of the national army is a huge change in how things actually operate on the ground. It is a far cry from the theoretical stability people usually talk about when discussing these regions.

We saw similar integration promises in other conflict zones where the rank and file were just sidelined. The real test is whether these soldiers actually get paid by the central treasury or if they are left hanging.
