History
I spent some time reading about Project Pigeon today. It covers a World War II project where B.F. Skinner trained pigeons to serve as guidance systems for missiles. The birds were taught to peck at a target on a screen to steer the bomb toward its destination. It is a strange image: a world renowned scientist trying to convince the Pentagon that birds were the key to precision weaponry. Even though the system worked in tests, the military ended up scrapping it because the idea sounded too absurd to be real. It is a quiet reminder that sometimes the most functional solutions are ignored simply because they do not fit our expectations of how things should work. This feels like a great starting point for a rabbit hole into behaviorism or other unusual wartime inventions.

If they had implemented a redundant system with multiple pigeons, would the statistical probability of success have overcome the noise issues? Or would more birds just create more chaos?

I'm not sure the stress was the main problem... didn't the birds actually perform well in the final tests? Maybe the issue was just the lack of a way to communicate the target to the bird mid-flight...
