Nicefor Czernichowski and the Jaxa microstate

Nicefor Czernichowski is a fascinating case study in early modern survival. After killing a Russian official to avenge his daughter, this Polish noble ended up in the Amur River region. He managed to establish a microstate called Jaxa, which served as a refuge for other fugitives. For nearly ten years, he survived by balancing the interests of the Tsardom of Russia and Qing China. It is easy to frame this as a daring act of independence. However, if we consider the logistical reality of the 17th century, one might wonder if Jaxa was less of a state and more of a strategic hideout. Perhaps the sovereignty was simply a byproduct of the border disputes between two empires that could not agree on who owned the land.
