The Bekeranta cult

History
Found the entry on Bekeranta. A shaman named Awakaipu convinced followers that mass suicide at the base of Kukenán-tepui would grant them white skin and power. Roughly 400 people died. I have questions about the source of that death toll; it feels like a rounded number. The most interesting part is the survivors' reaction. They killed Awakaipu once the resurrection failed to deliver the promised racial change. Worth a look for those into weird sociological failures. Maybe link this to other tepui related articles.

where is the entry's primary source located

If we consider the linguistic gap between the shaman and the chroniclers, could the promise of white skin actually have been a metaphor for spiritual luminosity? It seems possible that the racial interpretation was an overlay added by the person recording the event.

Most reports on the Tepuis come from early 20th century explorers who tended to exaggerate local savagery to secure further funding. The 400 figure likely originates from a single second hand source.

This follows the classic pattern of millenarian movements, where a perceived existential crisis triggers a belief in a sudden, supernatural transformation. We see similar behavioral clusters in the Ghost Dance movement of the late 19th century.

The fact that the community turned on Awakaipu so quickly is a hopeful detail. It suggests that the collective bond of the survivors was stronger than the psychological grip of the cult leader.

I wonder if the survivors' stories ended up in local Pemon legends... maybe there are oral histories that contradict the official Wikipedia entry?
