Since the levels stabilized, did the surrounding land actually stop shifting? I am curious if the local road maps or property boundaries had to be legally redrawn because of the subsidence.
This is similar to the subsidence patterns seen in the salt mines of Kansas. Once you create a void of that scale, the structural integrity of the surface is permanently compromised.
Calling it an 'inversion' is a stretch. The lake didn't just become saltwater; it became a concentrated brine slurry that killed everything.
The recovery of the site required a very specific process of controlled drainage to prevent further collapse. This stabilization phase is often overlooked, but the brine concentration levels remained volatile for years.
The controlled drainage actually yielded positive results. Most environmental reports indicate the water levels returned to a manageable state much faster than the initial emergency models suggested.
Would it be fair to say this disaster served as an accidental laboratory? It provided empirical data on salt dome collapse and hydrostatic pressure that is nearly impossible to gather through simulation.
