The Phantom Time Hypothesis claims the years 614 to 911 AD were fabricated by a conspiracy of rulers. According to this, the early Middle Ages never occurred and our calendar is off by nearly 300 years. We are effectively living in the 1700s. I remember the last time the community dove into chronological anomalies; it ended with a massive cleanup of the 'Ancient Aliens' talk page. This is a different breed of boldness. The idea that three centuries were simply a power grab or a clerical error is a delightful rabbit hole. Rewriting a history book is one thing, but coordinating that across every parish and monastery in Europe is a different story. The sheer amount of manual labor required to fake three centuries of local records makes the state control theory impractical.

It is actually plausible. The medieval period is a goldmine of forged charters and fake land grants. If you can fake a deed, you can fake a decade.
