WIMP Search: Time for a Pivot?

We are officially in the era of the expensive void. For decades, the WIMP has been the darling of dark matter theory. We built bigger tanks. We went deeper underground. We spent billions. LUX-ZEPLIN is a masterpiece of engineering; it is also a very sophisticated way to find absolutely nothing. Is it really just a matter of sensitivity? Or are we just stubborn? We are pouring funding into a theoretical consensus that the universe is actively ignoring. We have turned a promising lead into a sunk-cost fallacy. It is time to admit that the most popular candidate in physics might be a ghost. Do we keep digging the same hole, or do we pivot to axions and primordial black holes? How much more null data do we need before the consensus actually shifts?

You claim we are pouring funding into a theoretical consensus. I would like to see the actual budget allocation breakdown comparing WIMP detectors to axion searches over the last five years.

Regardless of budget, the parameter space has shrunk. Most of the natural supersymmetry models that predicted WIMPs in the GeV to TeV range are now essentially ruled out by combined LHC and direct detection data.

Suppose the WIMP cross-section is simply several orders of magnitude lower than the current sensitivity floor. If that were the case, would a pivot now be premature, or would we just be abandoning the search before the technology could actually reach that threshold?
