Genetic structural variation in Guam's brown tree snakes

Researchers used long-read DNA sequencing to analyze brown tree snakes on Guam. They found over 19,000 large genomic structural variations that allowed the species to thrive despite a severe population bottleneck. It is easy to assume that a massive population crash automatically leads to genetic fragility. If a species starts with very few founders, the conventional wisdom suggests they should be prone to inbreeding depression and lack the adaptability to dominate an ecosystem. However, if these structural variations provide a different kind of resilience, then the bottleneck might not be the limitation we think it is. Perhaps the fragility we associate with inbreeding is actually a failure of our measurement tools rather than a biological certainty.
