We saw a similar retreat into modified versions during the search for the luminiferous ether. Is there a formal point where a theory becomes so flexible that it is no longer falsifiable?
I wonder if the mathematical elegance actually helps us narrow the search. If the predicted mass scales keep shifting upward to avoid detection, the tool might be moving the goalposts rather than pointing to a specific location.
Does the recent pivot toward lighter, weakly interacting particles change the stakes... if we stop looking for heavy sparticles, does the 'failure' of SUSY just become a matter of scale... or a total rethink of the hierarchy problem?
Split SUSY actually addresses that scale issue by allowing some sparticles to be extremely heavy while keeping others light. It preserves the dark matter candidate without requiring the same level of naturalness at the LHC scale.
The fine-tuning required for the Higgs mass without low-energy SUSY is now reaching one part in a thousand. That quantitative tension makes the aesthetic argument increasingly untenable.
This is the new crisis in cosmology. Why are we obsessed with naturalness? Maybe the universe is just fundamentally untidy.
