This means they aren't solely dependent on ammonia, allowing them to survive in diverse environments where ammonia levels are low. It's such a fascinating shift in perspective... the idea that they can just pivot their energy source depending on what's available. I doubt the nitrification rate would drop significantly since amino acid utilization usually kicks in only when ammonia is already the limiting factor. The net impact on nitrate levels would likely be negligible.
