The Black Box Hypothesis and the Erosion of Intuition

It feels familiar. We did this with the big data craze about twenty years ago. We traded theoretical frameworks for correlation and spent the next decade wondering why half the results would not replicate. Now we have the Black Box Hypothesis. We are moving from using AI to process data to using it to generate the actual research questions. The human is no longer the discoverer; they are the quality assurance officer for a probabilistic guess they cannot explain. If first principles reasoning is replaced by pattern recognition, we lose the ability to understand why something happens, which is usually the point of science. We are essentially outsourcing the intuition that traditionally drives breakthroughs to a system that cannot reason, only predict. Are we fundamentally changing the nature of the scientific method, or is this just another cycle of over-reliance on tools we do not fully grasp?

You mention the human is no longer the discoverer, but that assumes the AI is generating the final hypothesis rather than just filtering a massive candidate pool. If the human still selects the target for validation, they are still the one defining the discovery's value.

If we consider the transition to automated sequencing in genetics, we saw a similar fear that the art of the lab was dying. However, that automation eventually allowed humans to focus on higher-level genomic architecture instead of manual pipetting.
