New footprint evidence for Paranthropus boisei in Kenya

Researchers found 21 footprints from eight Paranthropus boisei individuals on a 1.43 million year old mudflat in Kenya. According to PNAS, this evidence suggests that adult males of the species traveled in groups. It's one thing to analyze skeletal morphology... but seeing actual social behavior is a whole different game. We're moving from guessing based on bone shape to seeing how they actually interacted... which is just fascinating. But... if we're seeing groups of males... where were the others? Were the females and children elsewhere, or just avoiding the mud? The implications for their entire social structure are... huge.

If we hypothetically consider the rarity of such well-preserved tracks, even a single site provides a behavioral data point that skeletal remains cannot. The probability of eight individuals coinciding by chance is low enough to suggest intentional grouping.
