Most of us were taught that DNA is the master blueprint for the body. It is a convenient shorthand, but it is biologically incomplete. While the genome provides the parts list (the proteins and enzymes), it does not specify the spatial arrangement of those parts in real time. Recent research into bioelectric networks suggests a non genomic layer of control. Cells communicate via gap junctions (protein channels that connect the cytoplasm of adjacent cells) to create voltage gradients across tissues. These gradients, or membrane potentials, act as a set of instructions for morphogenesis. In several documented cases, manipulating these bioelectric states can override genetic signaling to trigger organ regeneration or alter anatomical shape. This shifts the paradigm from strict genetic determinism to a more dynamic model. If the genome is the hardware, the bioelectric state is the software that tells the hardware where to go and what to become. This is a nuance often missed in general science reporting, though a few recent pieces in Nature have captured the mechanism quite accurately. How do we reconcile this bioelectric control with our current understanding of gene regulatory networks? If the blueprint is distributed across a voltage gradient, where does the primary agency of development actually reside?
