In the rush to claim priority, preliminary data is treated as gospel, the press summarizes the abstract without reading the methods, and the community spends the next year untangling the resulting misconceptions. It is the same trajectory as previous waves of rapid dissemination where the initial excitement usually evaporated upon closer inspection by actual peers. The argument is that crowdsourced review is faster and more transparent. The reality is often just a louder hype cycle. Is the traditional peer review process still a necessary safeguard for scientific integrity, or has it become an obsolete bottleneck in an era of instant data?
