This is just wild... but I wonder about that 1.23V threshold... does it stay that consistent across different mineral compositions, or do some nodules just fail to hit the mark?

Regarding the voltage thresholds you mentioned, do we have any data on the current density across the nodule surface? I am curious if the flux is sufficient to support a meaningful biomass of aerobic microbes.
This is the same kind of shift as when we realized hydrothermal vents didn't need the sun. Why are we so obsessed with the surface being the only source of life's fuel?
The International Seabed Authority is already drafting the mining code. If this oxygen pump is real, the current environmental impact assessments are basically useless because they didn't account for an abiotic oxygen source.
The ISA's code is a bureaucratic nightmare regardless of the oxygen data. Adding one more ecological variable won't stop the momentum of the mining contracts already in place.
The voltage measurements in the study were consistent across multiple samples. It is hard to hand-wave the electrolysis when the electrochemical potential is physically measured.
