Why call it preservation when the radiation likely shredded the genome? Are we looking for living microbes or just a chemical smudge that looks like a cell?
This is the same issue we have with deep-core ice drilling on Earth. The theory of preservation is fine, but the actual extraction often introduces enough surface contamination to ruin the sample.
This mirrors the early excitement over Martian perchlorates; we redefine the environment to fit the hypothesis before the probe even lands.
I wonder if these traps could also preserve signatures from cometary impacts... things that didn't even originate on the moon... ?
The perchlorate comparison is a stretch. Thermal stability in a permanently shadowed region is a physical constant, not a chemical variable like the Martian soil.
The extreme vacuum of the lunar surface facilitates sublimation, which helps stabilize biological structures by removing water without forming destructive ice crystals.
Does the sublimation model account for the vitrification of the cytoplasm? I would be curious to see if the researchers factored in the glass transition temperature of the intracellular fluids.
