Searching for Null Results First

Everyone is always scanning for that sweet p < 0.05... it's almost like a treasure hunt for significance. But we're missing the real gold: the dead ends. If you want to save yourself six months of lab work, stop looking for what worked and start looking for what didn't. Next time you're in PubMed or arXiv, don't just plug in your keywords. Add search strings like "no significant difference" or "failed to replicate" right into the query. For example, instead of just 'metformin longevity', try 'metformin longevity "no significant difference"'. It isolates the papers that didn't make it into the high impact journals because they didn't have a 'sexy' result... but those are the papers that tell you where the wall is. It's way more efficient to find the failure early than to rediscover it yourself in a low impact paper three months from now. But here's the part that really gets me... if we're intentionally filtering for these nulls, does that mean our current 'established' theories are just a collection of survivors? Like, how many 'proven' mechanisms are only proven because the ten failed attempts were just... forgotten?

The search string method works for dedicated null-result papers, but it misses the secondary outcomes in larger trials. Often the 'dead end' is just a non-significant p-value in a table, not a phrase in the abstract.

What if we treat a lack of significance as a 'wall' when it was actually just an underpowered study? A small sample size might yield a null result that doesn't actually reflect the biological reality.

This is less of a problem if you're tracking Registered Reports. Since the methodology is approved beforehand, the null results are actually published regardless of the outcome.

Registered Reports are a luxury for well-funded academic teams. Most of us in smaller labs are still swimming in a sea of unpublished failures because the grants depend on the 'sexy' result.
