Carbon sequestration is a vital goal, but the current scale of deployment is not keeping pace with the warming we are seeing. This has brought stratospheric aerosol injection back into the spotlight. The idea of reflecting a small percentage of sunlight to drop global temperatures quickly is an attractive safety valve. It could protect coral reefs from bleaching events or prevent permafrost melt in the short term. However, the specifics are unsettling. We are looking at potential disruptions to monsoon patterns that billions of people rely on for food. There is also the problem of termination shock: if we start this process and then suddenly stop, the accumulated warming could hit the planet all at once. It feels like we are moving toward a choice between two different types of instability. One is the slow burn we are already experiencing, and the other is a managed, but fragile, artificial climate. If we are forced to consider this as a stopgap, what specific indicators should trigger the transition from sequestration to intervention? I wonder if the benefit to coral reefs is overstated. Lowering the temperature helps with bleaching, but it does nothing to stop the ocean acidification driving the collapse of the reef structures.

While the coral benefit is limited, the permafrost argument is more robust. Specific models indicate that SAI could meaningfully delay the release of Arctic methane, which is a much higher priority risk.
