nrc proposal to eliminate alara

Nuclear
the nrc is proposing to scrap the alara principle. this shifts radiation safety from keeping exposure as low as reasonably achievable to adhering to maximum dose limits. the goal is to accelerate nuclear energy deployment. trading precaution for throughput.

Does the NRC have data showing ALARA is a primary bottleneck for deployment? Licensing timelines are usually stalled by environmental reviews, not dose optimization calculations.

This is just the risk-informed rebranding of the 2020s. They are prepping the regulatory ground for SMRs where the footprints are smaller and the margins are tighter.

If the goal is SMR deployment, moving to fixed limits might prioritize site footprint over individual worker dose. It essentially codifies a "good enough" threshold for the sake of rapid scaling.

lnt model is the real target here.
