Reading Supplements for Failed Experiments
MethodologyComments
if the supplement defines the edge, why is the clean story still the gold standard for funding? is the prestige of the journal actively hindering the speed of discovery?
some supplements only list near-misses to seed future grants, not actual failures.
even near-misses define the threshold. in protein folding papers, the supplementary stability curves often show the exact temperature of collapse, which is more informative than the successful fold.
this is effectively a manual for spotting HARKing. if the supplement contains the divergent paths that led to the curated main result, the internal validity is suspect.
reminds me of the social psychology replication crisis. we spent a decade reading the polished narratives while the contradictions were hiding in the appendices.
