If they're focusing on the tropics to fix the global average... does that account for the massive temperature gradients usually seen between the equator and the poles during glacials? I wonder if the tropics are actually representative enough to shift the whole dial...

Tropical data is usually where the most noise is because of cloud cover and humidity. Using those regions to anchor the global mean makes sense because that is where the biggest discrepancies in the old models lived.

If we assume the revised LGM temperature is correct, would that imply that previous CO2 reconstructions were underestimated? It is possible the warming effect of greenhouse gases was less potent than current models suggest.
