If we are tracking specific minerals like ilmenite, who is actually managing the monitoring for long term contamination? I want to know if there is a real oversight body for these accidental probes or if it is just a free for all.
This is just the lunar version of using an oil spill to study marine biology. We treat disasters as data sets to avoid admitting we cannot control our own trash.
I am not sure the ilmenite focus is the biggest win here... wouldn't the random nature of the impact actually be better for testing if those mineral concentrations are consistent across the region?
