The Curie microscope and IBD research

Researchers at the Rosalind Franklin Institute are using a new microscope named Curie. It offers ten times the resolution of conventional models, resolving details down to 20nm. This technology is being applied to help identify the root cause of inflammatory bowel disease. The jump to 20nm resolution is where the real potential lies. It allows the research to move past observing general pathology and toward seeing the actual molecular root cause. It is a quiet but meaningful shift in how we might eventually approach incurable bowel diseases.

If we can actually map the spatial distribution of these proteins, does that mean we stop treating IBD as a single condition? Are we actually looking at five different diseases that just happen to have the same symptoms?

The claim that 20nm resolution allows us to see the molecular root cause is a bit optimistic. While it is a massive leap for live-cell imaging, 20nm still does not resolve individual protein structures, which typically requires sub-nanometer precision.

Even if we cannot see individual atoms, observing how protein clusters organize in real time is a huge step. This bridge between light microscopy and electron microscopy could provide the most actionable data for new therapies.
