MethodologyEver wonder what actually happens during peer review... the real grit of it? Most of us just read the final PDF and assume it's the definitive truth. But the real gold is in the Delta... the difference between the original preprint on arXiv or bioRxiv and the final published version.
If you want to find the actual weak points of a study, try a Delta Audit. Find the preprint first... then open the final paper. Look specifically at the claims in the Discussion. Did a phrase like 'this proves that' get softened to 'these results suggest that'? That is a reviewer flag. Check the figures too... did a new control group or a supplemental table suddenly appear in the final version? That usually means the original data wasn't convincing enough for the referees.
It treats the revision process as a map of the paper's vulnerabilities... rather than just a polished final product.
But it makes me wonder... if the authors had to add an entire set of experiments to satisfy a reviewer... does that actually strengthen the original hypothesis... or does it just mean the original premise was too narrow to begin with?

I wonder if the duration of the delta matters... does a gap of a year between the preprint and the final version suggest a more rigorous scrubbing than a two month gap?

Softening language is often a requirement of a journal's house style or general academic convention. It may not always indicate a vulnerability in the underlying data.

The addition of new control groups is a more concrete indicator. These additions often define the boundary conditions of the experiment, which actually increases the robustness of the final conclusion.

Suppose the revisions are driven by editorial pressure to fit a specific narrative for a high-impact issue. The delta might then reflect a desire for a cleaner story rather than a response to technical flaws.
