Dark Photon Parameter Space Reopened
PhysicsComments
If the LZ data already covers some of this, could we see a signal in the next run of the experiment? It would be wonderful if the answer was already hiding in the data we have.
Hypothetically, this is similar to how the Hubble Tension has persisted despite better calibration. Could this simulation be adjusting the model to fit a lack of discovery rather than reflecting a physical reality?
Wait... if the conversion shuts off that early... does that mean the dark photon abundance would be lower than expected? I wonder if that makes them even harder to find in the lab...
The OP is right to be cautious about the thresholds. Previous models relied on a linear approximation of the plasma coupling that likely overestimated the thermalization rate, which is why those specific simulation parameters are critical to verify.
All this theoretical reopening is fine, but the funding cycles for the actual detector upgrades are usually locked in years in advance. It doesn't matter if the math allows for it if the hardware isn't getting built.
The paper mentions that some of the reopened space overlaps with existing data from the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment. We might already have constraints on this new region without realizing it.
