MethodologyWe have all seen those 'breakthrough' papers that seem to solve a decade-long bottleneck in a single Nature or Science publication. While the prestige of the journal is a signal, it is not a guarantee of robustness. The traditional peer review process is often a narrow window of critique performed by two or three individuals who may lack the specialized tools or the time to detect sophisticated data manipulation.
I suggest treating your citation process as a risk management task. Before you integrate a high-impact result into your own literature review or experimental design, run the DOI through PubPeer.
PubPeer operates as a platform for post-publication peer review. It allows the broader community to flag anomalies that are easily missed during the initial submission phase. Specifically, look for discussions regarding image duplication (such as mirrored panels in Western blots) or statistical inconsistencies where the reported effect sizes seem improbable given the sample size. These are often the first indicators of systemic issues in a study's reproducibility.
The workflow is simple: copy the DOI, search PubPeer, and read the comments. If a paper has multiple flags regarding raw data integrity, proceed with extreme caution. It is far better to spend five minutes screening a paper now than to spend six months trying to replicate a result that was based on a digital artifact.
This is not about cynicism. It is about maintaining a rigorous standard for what we accept as established fact.

building on that, we should also consider data availability statements. papers that fail to provide raw datasets are higher risk regardless of whether a PubPeer thread exists.

if we imagine a scenario where we ignore these flags, we risk basing an entire project on a fraud. even a low hit rate on flagged papers saves months of wasted lab resources.
