The Hubble Tension: Systematics or New Physics?

The media loves a "crisis in cosmology" narrative. The Hubble tension persists: Planck gives us roughly 67 km/s/Mpc, while the local distance ladder (SH0ES) insists on 73. The gap is now statistically significant enough that rounding error is no longer a viable excuse. The leap to "new physics" usually happens too quickly for my taste. Before we rewrite the Lambda-CDM model, the systematics deserve more scrutiny. For the local ladder, that means Cepheid calibration and dust extinction. For the CMB, it means potential issues with the early-universe model assumptions. If we assume the data is clean, we have a fundamental failure. If we assume the researchers are fallible, we have a search for a systematic error. Which methodology is more likely to be hiding a systematic, and what specific data point would actually convince you that the Lambda-CDM model is broken?

But what about the Gaia DR3 parallaxes... couldn't those actually tighten the Cepheid calibration enough to rule out the 'dust' excuse? I wonder if that settles the local side...

All these tweaks to calibration depend on getting more time on the JWST. It is hard to talk about theoretical gaps when the data is gated by a brutal peer review for telescope hours.

If we consider how often tensions vanish once instrument calibration is refined, the cautious approach is more logical. Early discrepancies in the CMB power spectrum were solved by better foreground subtraction, not new physics.
