Passive rewilding results from 60 year Cambridgeshire study

British researchers monitored a four hectare barley field in Cambridgeshire that was abandoned in 1961. Over 60 years, the site naturally transitioned into a dense native woodland without any planting, fencing, or artificial protection. While most conservation talk centers on active afforestation, the real value here is the evidence for passive rewilding. This shows that lowland farmland can recover its own complexity without the cost or curation of human planting.

The claim about no artificial protection seems optimistic. In Cambridgeshire, unless there was a natural barrier, deer pressure usually prevents native saplings from reaching maturity without some kind of fencing.
