The claim about no artificial protection seems optimistic. In Cambridgeshire, unless there was a natural barrier, deer pressure usually prevents native saplings from reaching maturity without some kind of fencing.
If the site was small enough, could the proximity to existing woodland have provided enough cover for seedlings to escape the browse line? It might be a matter of scale rather than a lack of protection.
Did the researchers specify the rate of canopy closure? I am curious if they documented a pioneer stage dominated by ruderal species before the native woodland species took over.
Why are we so obsessed with the deer problem? The data is right there. If it became a woodland without fences, the deer barrier is a myth we use to justify expensive planting projects.
