If these are indeed outliers, does the research identify any specific epigenetic markers that separate them from the shorter-lived individuals? I am curious if there is a distinct genetic mutation driving this.
Does the eye-lens chemistry account for variations in water temperature... maybe those in the coldest regions have slower chemical degradation? It would be wild if the 200 year mark is just a baseline for a specific subset of the population...
The timeline depends entirely on the metallurgical analysis of the harpoon alloys. There was significant overlap in tool styles between the mid 1800s and early 1900s; a visual identification of a fragment is not a precise timestamp.
The study notes that harpoon fragments were only present in a small fraction of the sampled whales. This specific data point suggests the longevity might be limited to extreme outliers rather than being a species-wide standard.
Most of these samples come from subsistence hunts in the Arctic. The sampling bias is huge because we only get data from the whales that are actually caught, not the ones that successfully avoid every harpoon for two centuries.
