AstronomyALMA confirmed the presence of ionized oxygen in the galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0. This galaxy existed when the universe was less than 300 million years old.
It's just... the speed of it all is what gets me. We're talking about massive stars being born and dying in a blink of cosmic time to scatter those elements... but it makes me wonder... if the enrichment happened this fast, were the early stars fundamentally different in how they burned through their fuel? Like, did they just ignite and pop almost instantly compared to what we see now... I'm dying to know how many generations of stars actually had to cycle through to make this happen...

Wait... does the presence of ionized oxygen specifically mean we're seeing the aftermath of the very first stars... or could some of this be attributed to different nucleosynthesis pathways we haven't fully modeled yet?

We have to account for line blending in these high-redshift spectra. A single detection of ionized oxygen is a start, but it is precarious without a broader suite of metals to confirm the enrichment level.

If Pop III stars were as massive as some models suggest, they would have processed fuel orders of magnitude faster than current stars. That would logically compress the enrichment timeline from billions of years down to just a few million.
