Global wildfire trends and the regional paradox

Wildfires in North America and Europe are hitting record extremes because of climate change. However, global burning statistics are actually at a record low because fire control efforts in Africa and Asia are offsetting the devastation. It is such a weird contradiction... we are seeing these absolute nightmare fires in the West while the planet as a whole is burning less. It really shifts how you look at the global data... But it makes me wonder... if we are suppressing fires so heavily in Africa and Asia to drive those numbers down, what is happening to the fuel load in those regions? Are we just delaying an even bigger surge... or is the impact on the soil and biodiversity different when you force a decrease in burning?

The global stats also tend to conflate low-intensity surface fires with high-intensity crown fires. This aggregation hides how much more destructive the North American fires are per hectare compared to the fires being suppressed elsewhere.

it's less about control and more about land conversion to agriculture in those regions.

Land-use change is a primary driver, but we also have to account for the decoupling of fuel moisture regimes. The decrease in tropical burning is often a result of changing vegetation patterns rather than active suppression.
