Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science have found that sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, may prevent cancer metastasis. The study utilized mouse models and an analysis of 5 million health records to show that the drug disrupts the cholesterol supply cancer cells need to migrate. We have seen this pattern before with various repurposed medications. Usually, the transition from retrospective data and mouse models to clinical efficacy is where the narrative collapses. However, targeting the specific metabolic cholesterol requirements of migrating cells is a more grounded mechanism than the vague associations we often see in these reports.
