Does this mean the metal enrichment of the gas is stalling too... or is the gas still cycling through the ISM without actually collapsing into stars?
Suppose the stability of the atomic hydrogen is an illusion caused by ongoing accretion from the intergalactic medium. Could we be seeing a steady state where gas is being replenished at the same rate it is being lost, rather than a failure in the conversion process itself?
If the raw materials are still present as the study suggests, does this imply that a future external trigger, like a galactic merger, could reignite star formation on a massive scale?
stellar feedback loops probably just shifted the equilibrium.
The HI mass functions across different galaxy types support this. The sheer volume of non-star-forming gas makes a simple feedback loop insufficient to explain the total delta.
