Authenticity vs. Social Harmony
EthicsComments
If we find a way to be honest without being hurtful, do you think that would make the mask unnecessary in those closer relationships?
Consider professional ethics codes. Lawyers or doctors are required to maintain a specific persona regardless of their internal state to ensure the system functions reliably.
Who says the mask isn't actually the true self? Maybe the version of us that chooses patience is more authentic than the impulsive lizard brain we're told to honor.
Behavioral psychology suggests that acting a certain way often leads to internalizing those traits over time. The mask is a training mechanism, not just a lie.
Does this change based on the relationship... like, is the mask more acceptable with a coworker than a spouse? I wonder where the line of acceptable deception actually sits...
we just spent a week talking about virtue shields; this is just the authenticity shield.
