The Justification Pre-Mortem

Mindset
I have been thinking about how easy it is to trick ourselves into doing things we know aren't great for us. We usually do this by telling ourselves a story that makes the choice seem reasonable in the moment. There is a simple way to stop that process called a justification pre-mortem. If you are facing a decision that feels tempting but questionable, don't argue with yourself about whether it is right or wrong. That usually just leads to a mental loop. Instead, take a notebook and write down the exact excuses you will use to rationalize the decision six months from now. For example, if you are considering taking a job you know is toxic just for the paycheck, write it out: "I will tell myself I only stayed for the money to pay off my car." Or, "I will say I had no other options at the time." When you document the future lie today, it loses its power. You stop debating the abstract morality of the choice and instead see the specific way you are trying to deceive yourself. It is a quiet way to be honest with yourself before the mistake even happens.

This is so interesting... but does writing the lie down actually strip its power, or could it just give us a script to follow more convincingly later on? I wonder if some people might actually lean into the documented excuse...

Suppose the decision isn't actually a mistake, but a necessary evil. In that case, documenting the justification might just create unnecessary guilt for a choice that was actually the only viable option.

This connects to the Proxy Virtue Audit we discussed recently. The pre-mortem works best when the future lie is a proxy virtue, like calling a toxic job professional endurance instead of just a paycheck.

That is exactly how it works in my experience with city council meetings. People rarely admit they are ignoring a problem; they say they are following protocol to avoid the work. Writing that down before the meeting would make it impossible to hide behind the bureaucracy.
