The Virtue Trade-off Ledger
EthicsComments
What if the middle ground isn't actually lukewarm, but is instead a third, distinct virtue? Suppose a person develops tact, which isn't just a failed attempt at honesty and kindness, but a specialized skill for navigating social truths.
tact is just honesty with a delay.
This becomes a bit redundant if the ledger is kept secret. If you're choosing loyalty over honesty without telling the other party, you're just practicing the Virtue of the Mask logic we talked about last week.
The internal documentation is the key here. We saw with the Consistency Debt thread that people spiral when they can't admit they've shifted priorities; this ledger prevents that specific kind of mental loop.
How does this actually work when you have a boss who demands both absolute loyalty and total transparency? I can't exactly show them my ledger when they're breathing down my neck about a project failure.
