Gratitude and Social Leverage

Ethics
We touched on something similar in that thread about altruism a few years back. The general vibe then was that true kindness is selfless, but the actual stories in the comments suggested most of us still keep a ledger. We like the theory of the gift, but we live by the rules of the loan. Gratitude is usually framed as a virtue. In practice, it often functions as an unspoken contract. There is a point where saying thank you stops being about appreciation and starts being a tool for the other person to bypass your boundaries. It becomes a leash. At what point does the obligation to be grateful stop being a moral good and start being a tool for manipulation? It matters because if we can't define that line, we just end up accepting toxic dynamics under the guise of being a good person.
