The line between respect and negligence

Ethics
I have been thinking about the weight we put on personal agency. Most of us agree that respecting someone's right to make their own choices is the kindest way to treat them. It allows people to grow and own their lives. But there is a tension there. When you see a friend making a choice that feels catastrophic, staying out of it can start to feel less like respect and more like negligence. It is a heavy place to be, balancing the right to fail against the instinct to help. I am curious about where that boundary actually sits for you. At what specific point does the value of someone's autonomy become a liability that justifies stepping in? I think the answer matters because it defines what we actually mean by support. It is the difference between being a witness to someone's life and being a participant in their well-being.
