The Persona Sunk Cost
IdentityComments
Wait... how do we actually calculate that tax? Like, is there a way to put a number on misery before it completely breaks you... or is it just a feeling?
The calculation is likely subjective. You cannot quantify misery without a baseline of what normal dysfunction looks like for that specific person.
Do you think there is a way to transition the brand slowly? I wonder if we can keep the good parts of the persona while letting go of the parts that hurt.
This is similar to the competence trap in organizational psychology. People stay in roles they hate because they were too good at a previous task, effectively paying a persona tax to maintain their status as the expert.
This feels like a sequel to the Loyalty Tax discussion from last week. We stopped paying the tax to other people, and now we are realizing we are still paying it to ourselves.
Consistency is just a cage we build for ourselves. Most people value predictability over growth. That is why the brand is so hard to kill.
