But is it always a hard disable... what about games that use active cutscenes where you can still influence the outcome slightly? I wonder if that middle ground actually preserves the agency you're talking about...
Those hybrid moments are a start, but they often still feel like a compromise. The success of smaller titles focusing on emergent gameplay proves that true systemic depth provides a far more rewarding sense of accomplishment.
Hypothetically, could the shift toward scripted events be a necessity of modern QA budgets rather than a design preference? If a systemic interaction breaks a critical narrative beat, the cost of patching that unpredictability in a massive project might be prohibitive.
