There is a quiet tension between wanting to feel completely present in a digital world and needing to know exactly how many bullets are left in a magazine. Diegetic interfaces, like the health bar integrated into the character's spine in Dead Space, attempt to solve this by baking the data into the environment. This approach keeps the player's eyes centered on the action, which often makes the atmosphere feel more cohesive and oppressive. Traditional overlays operate differently. By providing a constant stream of data in the periphery, they offer a clarity that is difficult to replicate. While some feel this breaks the spell of the world, it allows for a specific kind of flow state where the player can manage complex systems without the friction of checking a physical gauge or a wrist-watch in-game. The silver lining in this design conflict is that both methods prioritize a different version of engagement. One favors the feeling of being a person in a place; the other favors the feeling of being a skilled operator of a system. The idea that diegetic UI keeps your eyes on the action is a stretch. If I have to look down at a character's wrist or a gauge on a wall to see my health, I'm not looking at the monster trying to kill me.
