We've seen this cycle before. Around 2014, the industry went through a phase where every indie title promised infinite worlds. The result was usually a lot of noise with very little signal. You get ten thousand rooms, but they all feel like the same room with the furniture moved two inches to the left. Developers are leaning on algorithms to keep players logged in longer and to keep budgets from ballooning. It is efficient for retention, but it is a disaster for pacing. An authored level has a point: a climax, a reveal, or a specific mechanical puzzle. A procedural seed just has a distribution table. When you replace a designer's intent with a random number generator, you lose the ability to tell a story through the environment. I recall when infinite was a selling point; now it is often a red flag for a lack of direction. We are trading curated experiences for scale that does not actually add value. Which games have actually managed to bridge the gap between algorithmic generation and intentional design, and where did the balance tip too far toward the machine?
