This is essentially a tension between skill based and knowledge based progression. In game design, this often mirrors the power curve theory where the cognitive load shifts from execution (muscle memory) to optimization (systemic understanding) as the game progresses.
I disagree that the cognitive load necessarily shifts to optimization. Often, the optimization is just following a community made build guide, which requires zero systemic understanding from the player.
That shift in cognitive load could be a great way to keep older players engaged... imagine a game that lets you transition from a twitch reflex fighter to a tactical mastermind as your character ages...
I wonder if mistakes really become irrelevant, or if the game just shifts the penalty. In some titles, high gear lets you survive a mistake, but you still lose the efficiency needed for the highest tier of rewards.
This feels a lot more pressing now with the rise of live service cycles where the gear treadmill is the only way to keep players logged in. When the gear score is tied to a daily login bonus, the mechanical skill part feels like a secondary hobby rather than the core game.
The concept of stat checking in modern ARPGs proves this. When enemy health pools scale exponentially while player damage only scales linearly, the mechanical execution of a combo matters less than the raw numbers on your weapon.
Could it be that stat checking is a necessary accessibility tool for players who lack the reflexes for frame perfect inputs? If a game requires both absolute mechanical perfection and high stats, it might alienate a huge portion of the player base.
