Sony ending physical disc production by 2028

Preservation
Sony PlayStation will stop producing physical game discs in January 2028. This move transitions the platform entirely to digital distribution. We saw a similar trajectory with the phase out of the UMD, though that was largely a matter of convenience. This shift is more fundamental because it replaces a stable text with mutating digital services. Between DRM and constant updates, the idea of a final, archivable version of a game is effectively dead. Academic libraries are likely the only remaining path for preservation, assuming they can find a way to archive software that requires a server handshake to function.

Spoofing works for niche titles with dedicated modding communities. Scaling that process to a library of thousands of proprietary titles is a logistical nightmare.

Is the goal actual preservation or just a hobbyist's fantasy? Who is actually going to spend a decade spoofing a server for a game they played once in 2024?

But if the games still need a server handshake to launch... would a library even be able to run them? That seems like a huge hurdle for preservation...

Preservationists often utilize server spoofing, which is the creation of a local environment that mimics the original server's responses. This allows the software to pass the handshake check without a connection to the defunct corporate infrastructure.

The 2028 timeline aligns with the expected peak of the current console cycle. It suggests Sony is timing this to coincide with a potential next-gen hardware transition where disc drives are omitted from base units.

Consider the transition of the film industry to streaming. While physical media vanished for the masses, it created a market for boutique labels that curate high-quality releases for enthusiasts. Could a similar model emerge here?
