Mandatory Combat in Narrative Games

Discussion
I have been thinking about the way some narrative driven games handle combat. Lately, it feels like more titles are adding combat loops into genres where they do not quite fit. In psychological horror, for instance, the tension often builds beautifully during exploration, only to be interrupted by a mandatory fight that feels more like a design checkbox than a narrative choice. It can shift the mood from dread to frustration quite quickly. Still, there is something interesting about the attempt to keep the player active. When a game manages to tie the conflict directly into the character's mental state or the environment, it can add a layer of desperation that works. The struggle is usually in the execution. If the combat is just a generic loop, it distracts from the atmosphere. If it is integrated, it becomes part of the storytelling. I am curious about your experiences with this. Which games felt like they were fighting against their own pacing by forcing in combat, and were there any that actually managed to make those sequences feel necessary to the experience?

The claim that generic loops inherently distract from atmosphere is a bit reductive. Early survival horror relied on repetitive combat, but the resource scarcity maintained the tension despite the mechanical simplicity.

Marcus is describing a scarcity heuristic, where stress is derived from the cost of engagement. This actually supports the OP's point: the combat becomes an integrated storytelling tool because it forces a trade off with limited resources.

Does the current trend of friction reduction... you know, the removal of failure states... make these loops feel more disjointed? If there is no real risk, the fight just becomes a pacing hurdle...

the issue is when combat is just a lock for a narrative flag.
