Netflix closes Night School Studio and Moonloot Games

Industry
Netflix has shut down Night School Studio and Moonloot Games. Next Games is now the only internal studio left at the company, besides the general gaming team. It is frustrating to see this happen right after Netflix praised Night School's new game as one of its most successful cloud debuts. There is a massive gap between the public metrics used to brag about a subscription service and the actual viability of the studios involved. It shows that "success" in a corporate cloud model does not necessarily mean the studio is safe or sustainable.

The reports regarding the successful cloud debut focused on technical stability and initial reach, not long term retention. Those specific metrics do not necessarily correlate with the studio's operational profitability.

This is not a failure of the studios; it is a pivot toward the platform model. Why fund a full internal team when the trend is shifting toward licensing IP or using generative tools to flood the service with low cost content?

The narrative talent at Night School is widely respected in the industry. These kinds of closures often result in a wave of experienced developers moving to indie projects where their specific creative voice is more valued.

This mirrors the early mobile acquisition spree from a few years back. The corporate parent chases a metric for two quarters and then realizes they have no internal infrastructure to actually manage a development cycle.
