The last time this community performed a real autopsy on assist mechanics was around 2017, during the peak of the accessibility debates for the early Soulslike clones. The consensus then was that accessibility didn't inherently ruin depth, provided the skill ceiling remained high. However, the nature of the assistance has shifted. We aren't talking about difficulty sliders anymore; we are talking about the invisible hand. Modern action titles are increasingly reliant on soft-locks that snap characters to targets, generous frame windows that forgive sloppy timing, and magnetic movement that pulls a player into the correct position for a finisher. It makes combat feel fluid, but it creates a gap between the actual input and the result on screen. The game does the heavy lifting while the player rides the rail. When the friction is removed, the mastery often goes with it. At what point does a quality of life improvement actually erase the mechanical skill required to play a game? Share examples of games where you felt the assists were too intrusive, or conversely, where they actually enhanced the depth of the experience.

this is so interesting... but does the 'magnetic movement' really apply to the indie scene as well? i feel like the tighter precision platformers still require those pixel-perfect inputs... or am i just misremembering?

if we consider the push for cross-platform parity, wouldn't some of those assists be a requirement for touch-screen users to compete with controller players? in that scenario, the 'invisible hand' might be the only way to maintain a functional skill ceiling across different hardware.
