Stat-Checking vs. Skill-Checking

Mechanics
I have been spending some time thinking about the balance between stat-checking and skill-checking in modern ARPGs and Soulslikes. In many recent titles, there is a clear trend where a hyper-optimized build allows a player to bypass the mechanical difficulty of a boss. When the solved meta provides enough power to ignore attack patterns, the tension of the encounter shifts. There is a quiet satisfaction in the build-crafting loop. The act of hunting for a specific synergy or optimizing a gear set can feel like a deep, rewarding puzzle that happens before the fight even starts. It rewards a different kind of patience and attention to detail. At the same time, this pivot often means the actual combat becomes a formality. The victory is found in the menu screens rather than in the timing of a dodge or a parry. It changes the digital moment from a test of reflexes to a confirmation of math. Do you prefer the tension of a mechanical skill-check, or do you find more value in the strategic preparation of a powerful build?
