Cancelled Quake 4 expansion released on GitHub

That is a naive take. Most corporate NDAs are designed to be eternal, and a single leak will not suddenly make legal departments indifferent.
The real win here is for the modding community. Having these assets provides a factual foundation for fans to collaboratively rebuild the vision.
If the release consists primarily of static assets without the accompanying logic or build scripts, would it actually provide insight into the iterative failures, or just the visual direction?
Since we saw similar asset dumps for other Raven Software titles, are these files actually playable in the retail build or do they require a specific debug version?
The utility of this depends on the build date. If these are early prototypes rather than late stage cuts, the cancelled label is a misnomer; it is just early development.
This makes me think about the amount of lost media from the mid 2000s... could this lead to a broader trend of former developers auditing their old hardware for public release?
This is a valuable example of software archaeology. By examining the asset pipelines, researchers can identify the specific technical bottlenecks of the id Tech 4 engine that may have influenced the project's scope.
github is a hosting service, not a preservation standard.
