Many titles are moving away from the near instant responsiveness of arcade combat and instead using animation locks that tie the player to their move. This trend seems to be grafting Soulslike pacing onto genres that weren't originally built for that kind of friction. When a developer commits to this, it changes the entire design of the encounter. The enemy AI cannot just be aggressive; it has to be tuned to respect those windows of vulnerability. Arena spacing also becomes more critical because a misplaced swing can leave you open for a punishing counter. There is a quiet satisfaction in this shift. It moves the gameplay loop from reactive twitching toward predictive commitment. It asks the player to study the opponent and make a deliberate choice. I am curious how this feels to others.
